What a day is like

In the Parco di Portofino nature and history share the same path, which happens in very few other places. In half a day you go from Second World War gun batteries into Mediterranean scrub, and then down to San Fruttuoso, which you can only reach on foot or by boat.

I run days out at every level: a quiet loop, the full traverse, a day weighted towards the landscape or one weighted towards the history. We usually decide together before we set off, depending on how far you want to walk and what you want to see.

As we walk I explain what we are going through — why the batteries are there, how the abbey lived, why the scrub grows the way it does. It is the part of the job I enjoy most.

Five example routes

  1. The Second World War gun batteries loop
  2. Camogli – Portofino traverse (via Passo del Bacio)
  3. Camogli – Portofino traverse (via Pietre Strette)
  4. Inside the Abbey of San Fruttuoso
  5. The Monte di Portofino loop

Who it suits

  • People who don't walk much but still want to see the sea from above
  • People who walk a lot and want the whole traverse
  • Families, if we pick the right route together

What to bring

  • Hiking boots with a proper sole
  • Water: there are few springs on the headland
  • A windproof layer, even in summer — the ridge is exposed

How booking works

Write to me with the date you have in mind and how many of you there are. I answer personally, and we choose the route together.
